Does using your email on a cell phone cost EXTRA?

I have an AT&T Blackjack II. Today I set up my email and I'm afraid it's charging me for it. I don't have internet on it (if that matters) and i need help turning it off. i cant figure out how to make the emails stop coming. Please help me before i have another $1000 phone bill
