Are 'ethanol ' stickers required on gas pumps?

In the U.S. and Canada is it required for a gas station to put stickers on the pumps if the gas contains ethanol? I sometimes see stickers on pumps indicating that the gas 'may' contain up to 10% ethanol. What's the deal?
