Traveling from Cartagena to Merida, VN.. whats the best route?

im flying into cartagena and wish to travel north east along the carribean sea and into venezuela...eventually ending in Merida. Is this journey possible/advisable over land and if so, what are the travel times...also...what airline will be able to return me to cartagena from merida at the end? thanks
