If Kyle Reese was killed in the first Terminator, How can John Connor send him back in the future?!?!?

Ok, So in the future, John Connor sends back Kyle Reese to protect his mother ( not knowing KR is his father). Kyle Reese dies. If kyle is dead, how can John send him back in the future thus eventually creating John himself?
